Network+ Chapter 4B Power Words - Defined

Network Plus Chapter 4B
  1. Multimode: A type of optical fiber mostly used for communication over short distances.
  2. Node: A device or data point in a larger network.
  3. Pad: A packet switching to enable data terminal equipment (DTE) not equipped for packet switching to access a packet-switched network.
  4. Ports: A communication endpoint.
  5. Preamble: A signal used in network communications to synchronize transmission timing between two or more systems.
  6. Promiscuous mode: is a mode for a wired network interface controller.
  7. Repeater: Used in transmission systems to regenerate analog or digital signals distorted by transmission loss.
  8. RG 58: A type of coaxial cable often used for low-power signal and RF connections.
  9. RJ 45: The most common twisted-pair connector.
  10. Segment: The parts into which any object is or may be divided.
  11. Sneakernet: An informal term for the transfer of electronic information by physically moving media such as magnetic tape, floppy disks, optical discs, and USB flash drives.
  12. Sniffer: A computer program that analyzes data on a communication network to gather intelligence.
  13. SAT: The problem of determining if there exists an interpretation that satisfies a given Boolean formula.
  14. STP: Creates a single path over a network, preventing any loops from occurring.
  15. Straight Though: A network cabling that connects a computer to a network device.
  16. Switch: A device in a computer network that connects other devices together.
  17. T connector: An electrical connector that connects three cables together.
  18. Thinnet: Is 0.2 inches in diameter with the same impedance as Thickwire.
  19. TIA/EIA 568A: The standard specifies cable physical attributes and performance characteristics for unshielded twisted pair.
  20. TIA/EIA 568B: Defines a standard for building cable system for commercial buildings that support data networks, voice, and video.
  21. Uplink Port: A special port on a network switch or hub that reverses the transmit and receive circuits of any twisted pair cable connected to it.
  22. UTP coupler: Used in the computer and telecommunications industry as Ethernet cables and telephone wires.
