Network+ Chapter 2A Power Words - Defined

Chapter 2 - Network Models
  1. Application layer – abstraction layer that specifies the shared communications protocols and interface methods used by hosts in a communications network.
  2. API – Application Programming Interface.
  3. Broadcast – the simultaneous transmission of the same message to multiple recipients.
  4. Broadcast Address – an IP address that is used to target all systems on a specific subnet.
  5. CRC – Cyclic Redundancy Check.
  6. Data Link Layer – is the protocol layer in a program that handles the moving of data into and out of a physical link in a network.
  7. Datagram – basic transfer unit associated with a packet-switched network.
  8. De-encapsulation – the process used by a receiving device to remove one or more of the protocol headers.
  9. Device ID – string of numbers and letters that identifies every individual smartphone or tablet in the world.
  10. Encapsulation – the bundling of data with the methods that operate on that data, or the restricting of direct access to some of an object's components.
  11. EUI-48 – a concatenation of the 24-bit company-id value by the IEEE Registration Authority and a 24-bit extension identifier assigned by the organization with that company-id assignment.
  12. Frame – digital data transmission unit in computer networking and telecommunication.
  13. FCS – Frame Check Sequence.
  14. Internet Layer – a group of internetworking methods, protocols, and specifications.
  15. IP – Internet Protocol.
  16. IP Address – a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or a local network.
  17. Link Layer – the lowest layer in the Internet Protocol Suite, the networking architecture of the Internet.
  18. Logical Address – the address at which an item (memory cell, storage element, network host) appears to reside from the perspective of an executing application program.
  19. Logical Addressing – The process associated with Logical Addressing.
  20. LLC – Logical Link Control.
  21. MAC – Media Access Control.
  22. MAC Address – is a hardware identification number that uniquely identifies each device on a network.
  23. Model – a database model conceived as a flexible way of representing objects and their relationships.
  24. NIC – Network Interface Card.
